My Clients (outlook users) Getting Tons of Spam, Solution?
"One of my client's websites is getting tons of spam. They are using outlook. I have no spam filtering on the server, and they have not spam filtering on their windows machines. What solution would you recommend? My personal choice is to give them each a gmail account, and have it "send as" their .com address, and then have their .com address forward to their "hidden" gmail. The reason I quote "hidden" is because some email clients will show the gmail account, but most will not."

Question for MacBook Pro Unibody owners
"Hello, This question is for anyone who owns one of the new MacBook Pros with the new aluminum unibody design. I just bought one a couple of days ago. It works great. The only thing odd I notice is some "clicking" noises coming from random areas around the body. It happens mostly when turning it on (warming up) or turning it off (cooling down). The noises don't come from any one particular area. It's hard to pinpoint but sometimes it seems they come from in back of the display, other times the area of the trackpad or battery I assume these are just normal expansion/contraction noises."

Switching from ActionScript 2 to ActionScript 3
"I've recently upgraded to Flash CS4. Wow! The new features are incredible and overwhelming. Working in the new interface has been a learning experience. I'm still not completely comfortable. There are many old habits which need to be forgotten, for sure. To complicate things, I decided it was finally time for me to get into ActionScript 3. Ugh! I hate programming. ActionScript 3 steps up to being OOP with a level of strictness, unlike the light-in-the-rules ways of ActionScript 2."

SITE REVIEW: Nimrod Design
"You know the drill: http://nimrod.com.au/ One issue I already know about - the portfolio page is quite CPU heavy. It's got 3 flash picture viewers (custom templated Picasa v3). Any ideas why? (I also know I'm missing web design & desktop apps galleries, still finishing them) Cheers!"

Recent Change with Godaddy, PHP, File Uploads
"Apparently Godaddy changed something with filesystem permissions, PHP configuration, etc over the weekend because I just had to change one of the default INI settings to get a script which works with uploaded files back up and running just now. The script was working fine before I left for the weekend. My main symptom was that the getimagesize function was returning a boolean false all of a sudden. I tried the filesize function to see if it was a reading error and sure enough, zero filesize..."

Bounce Rate and SEO
"I have read a couple of articles that correlate bounce rate and search engine performance (at least for Google). I'm trying to figure out what exactly is considered a bounce and some other stuff, so I made a list of questions: 1. What is the duration for a single page visit until it is no longer considered a bounce when a visitor leaves? 2. What if a visitor lands on a page, and then visits another page within 5 seconds and then closes the browser. Is that considered a bounce? 3. When external links are opened in a new window (i.e. target_blank, rel="external", onclick=... etc) is it considered a bounce? Is there any difference between using HTML and Javascript to open a new window? 4. If opening external links in a new window is considered a bounce, does it change anything if the user then comes back to the site which has remained opened and then starts browsing around?"

FTC Cracks Down on "Scareware"
"According to the FTC, a "scareware" scheme has tricked a million or more consumers into purchasing computer security products such as WinFixer, WinAntivirus, DriveCleaner, ErrorSafe, and XP Antivirus. A court froze the assets of Innovative Marketing, Inc. and ByteHosting Internet Services, LLC to preserve the possibility of providing consumers with monetary redress, the FTC stated."

Don't be afraid to send a DMCA Takedown Notice
"For the longest time I was afraid to send DMCA take-down notices because they seemed like more trouble than they were worth. I recently discovered that's far from accurate though. I've never spent more than 5 minutes tracking down a host and sending one out. Here's the simplified steps I've been taking in order to get my DMCA take-down notices honored by website hosts..."

Core 2 Duo 3.33 or 3.0 ?
"I'm looking to get the Core 2 Duo and what I want to know is whether the 3.33 ghz version is significantly better than the 3.0 ghz. I've seen the price for the 3.33 much higher than the 3.0, but I'm not so sure the 3.33 is really that much better."

How do you guys test webpages ?
"From all the reading I have done so far, I have not come across any articles about testing methodology. Is it common that web designers make the change and test locally in Dreamweaver or Expression, then just publish it? Is it safer to have a duplicate site (even with a different domain on different host) to test it out thouroghly before making the change in Live website?"

Ever wonder what failing hard-drives sound like ?
"Here's a list of 35 different hard-drives including audio clips of the strange noises they make as they fail. There's also some great pieces on each of the included hard-drive manufacturers & common failings of their drives. This list is compiled by a data recovery company, so I'm guessing they've heard it all when it comes to dead drives."

Featured Tutorial: Multi-Column Layout Using CSS Float
For this tutorial, we're targeting a layout that has three columns of content with spaces at the top and bottom for a header and footer. The page will be a fixed width and will also be centered in the browser's display area (the figure to your left).
We'll begin with an XHTML page structure in its most simple form. In the <head> of our document, we'll point to an external CSS file.
Once upon a time, web developers used the HTML element <table> to layout content columns. This practice is now recognized as cumbersome and not very semantic.
These days, instead of using <table>, we use the <div> element as a container for content. Once you get the hang of it, using <div> becomes very liberating and greatly reduces the amount of markup needed to layout a page.
This is an intermediate level tutorial that discusses one method of multi-column page layout. It assumes the reader has a good knowledge and understanding of HTML and CSS.
